Darren Thomas' 2008 Hat-Trick for Llangefni
In March 2008, Darren Thomas etched his name in Welsh Premier League history with a hat-trick for Llangefni Town, a rare highpoint during a season marred by relegation. The striker’s treble against Neath Athletic came just months after his move from Caernarfon Town, where he had previously been a key figure. Thomas, then 25, netted all three goals in a 4-0 victory, with a 15-yard strike, a close-range finish, and a late goal sealing the win. His performance earned praise, as Llangefni escaped the drop after a traumatic campaign.
A Season of Struggles and Triumph
Despite Thomas’ heroics, Llangefni’s season was a rollercoaster. The team, fresh from promotion, finished 18th after 30 matches, with Thomas leading the scoring chart with 13 goals. His efforts earned him a League Player of the Month award. The hat-trick match, however, was pivotal for their relegation survival. Neath Athletic, who had led 1-0 early, saw Thomas and Ywain Gwynedd combine for two goals in 14 minutes, before Sean Cronin equalized. Llangefni’s late resurgence, capped by Thomas’ 81st-minute strike and Steve Kehoe’s 40-yard wonder goal, ensured a vital three-point haul.
