Caernarfon Town will host a Wales Under-21 international for the first time this October. The club's Oval stadium has been selected for Cymru's final UEFA U21 EURO qualifier against Austria on Tuesday, October 6.
The fixture spotlights a major redevelopment at the ground. Over £1 million was invested ahead of this summer's UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in north Wales. This work included installing a brand-new pitch and significantly extending and renovating the changing rooms.
The Oval successfully hosted three matches during that youth tournament, featuring Croatia, Serbia, and Italy. This investment arrives during a successful period for the Canaries, who won the JD Welsh Cup for the first time last season. The club currently sits sixth in the Cymru Premier with nine points from four games, having scored eight goals and conceded three.
Caernarfon Town chairman Paul Evans said the transformation means the stadium will be "among the best in Wales, with fantastic modern facilities and a top-class pitch."
Evans added that the project provides a "huge boost" for the club and should make it a more attractive proposition for supporters and local businesses. The opportunity to host international youth football is a direct result of these facility improvements.
The U21 match is a notable off-field event during a busy campaign. On the pitch, Caernarfon Town are three points behind league leaders Barry Town.
Manager Matty Jones will lead the Wales U21 side for their final qualifier at The Oval, following a trip to Belgium earlier in the international window. Ticket sales for the Austria match are scheduled to begin on September 14, with the exact kick-off time to be confirmed.
Hosting this match is a significant moment for the club's profile and its upgraded facilities. It provides a tangible return on the stadium investment and offers fans a unique occasion to watch future Welsh internationals in Gwynedd.
For the first team, the focus remains on the league campaign where their recent form reads WWLW. Supporters can track the team's progress and position in our standings section. Balancing this international shows with their push up the Cymru Premier table defines an exciting period for the club.
