Darren Thomas, 39, has announced he will leave Caernarfon Town after 15 years. He departs after 435 appearances and 148 goals for the club.

A Storied Career

Thomas began his senior career with Caernarfon Town Reserves before moving to Bontnewydd, where he won the Caernarfon and District League in 2004-05. He returned to The Oval the following season, then joined Llangefni Town for four seasons, scoring 13 goals in 30 appearances in 2007-08 and earning League of Wales Player of the Month in March 2008. After a brief spell with Aberystwyth in 2015, he returned to Caernarfon in 2013.

Highlights and Accolades

During his first season back, Caernarfon won the Welsh Alliance League title, Cookson Cup and FAW Trophy; Thomas scored 19 league goals and netted twice in the Trophy final. He scored a goal against TNS in the 2014-15 Welsh Cup that later won Sgorio’s Goal of the Decade award, and a run-and-finish against Ammanford in 2019-20 that earned Goal of the Season. Thomas captained the side in their first-ever European tie in 2024-25 and helped win the Cymru Premier play-off finals in 2021-22 and 2023-24. He was named Caernarfon Town Player of the Season in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Farewell Message

In an emotional statement, Thomas said: “After 15 amazing years, I have made one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make - I am leaving Caernarfon Town Football Club. The team and club is in a really good place and I just want to play a bit more than I have been recently so I think it’s the right time to leave.” He added that growing up in Ysgubor Goch, he dreamed of playing for The Oval and that the Cofi Army’s support had been a constant. Thomas thanked players, staff and fans, and noted he will still play in a testimonial shirt for a final appearance.

Future Plans

Thomas will finish his career with a testimonial match and will remain a “Cofi” in spirit, promising to return to the Oval to cheer the team. His departure marks the end of an era for a player who has become a club legend, nicknamed the Cofi Messi for his skill and leadership.
